What Should Kolzig Do?

Would you rather Olie Kolzig retire this offseason, and forever be recognized as a Cap, or see him pursue the Stanley Cup for another season or two?

I’d love to see him retire as a Cap, but it’s his legacy and his body. If he feels he can play more, I support his decision. I hope he does win a Cup.

I’ve said it before and I will again: Olie will forever be a part of this Caps team. When Ovechkin and his Caps hoist the chalice over their heads in coming years, Olie will be as much a part of it as anyone. At least in my mind.

My gut instinct was to say no, I want him to go out a Cap, but then I realized how unselfish he’s been all these years, and I say let him go for his cup, I’d just have preferred he won it with us.

I’m with Ben and B on this. As much as I’d like to see Olie go out as a Cap, that is what would be best for the fans, not necessarily what is best for Olie. He has served us well… I’m trying to let him go with grace.

I want to see the name Olaf Kolzig on the Stanley Cup one day. I would prefer it to be with the Washington Capitals, but if not, then I’ll cheer him on as long as his team isn’t playing the Caps! Best case for me would be to see Olie reconsider and sign with the Caps in a backup role, and the Caps to win it all next season!

With as much as Olie has given us over the years, we should support him if he wants to make a cup run with another team.

Ray Bourque is a classic example: He will always be known as a Bruin, but he won a cup with the Aves at the end of his career. There wasn’t a Bruin fan around that wasn’t happy for him. His legacy is as a Bruin, just like Olie’s will be as a Cap.

No matter what happens, Olie will always be a Capital, let him do what he feels is best for him and his family. Are we so selfish that we want him to retire instead of supporting him in his endeavors?

Who is going to sign him as a #1 goalie? His best chance was to stay here and help us win the cup. If you can play stellar goal for 25-30 games a year, do you mean to tell me that’s not a valuable contribution to a team? It keeps the starter rested and gets you home ice advantage.

What I’d really like to see is Leonsis kick GMGM in the ass and tell him to work on his communication and people skills. And start with talking with Olie and coming to an agreement to keep him in a Caps uniform for a couple of more years in some capacity, either alternating with Huet (assuming we re-sign him) as a starter, and Johnny working back-up.

I know it is a pipe dream, but you never know until you try.

Having said all that, Olie deserves to try and realize his dream of raising The Cup, no matter which team it ultimately is. We’ll always have the memories of his career with Washington, and moving on to another team won’t change that. And when the retirement decision is finally made, we should raise the jersey high in the rafters and raise the roof with shouts of “Olie Olie Olie”

I agree with JR…and considering we’re winning the Cup next year it would be in his best interest to stay with us until he retires :)

It seems no one from the “Retire, Olie!” camp has commented. This ain’t the first one.

Every player wants his name on the Cup, and Olie deserves to have his name there, as well. Would any Caps fan not cheer as he lifted Hockey’s Holy Grail above his head, no matter what sweater he was wearing?

(Unless he was playing for a team from Pennsylvania or Buffalo. I’d probably resort to a polite golf clap…but I like to think Olie’d retire before playing for one of those teams ;~) )

Hate to say it, but I think Olie would be an almost perfect fit with the Senators. They are looking to cut/trade Emery and they don’t look too sure about Gerber carrying the load.
