There’s good news for Leafs fans. The Maple Leafs will be playing in June … in a new Mike Myers movie called The Love Guru.
From a National Hockey League press release:
In the comedy “The Love Guru,” Pitka (Mike Myers in his first original character since Austin Powers) is an American who was left at the gates of an ashram in India as a child and raised by gurus. He moves back to the U.S. to seek fame and fortune in the world of self-help and spirituality. His unorthodox methods are put to the test when he must settle a rift between Toronto Maple Leafs star hockey player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) and his estranged wife. After the split, Roanoke’s wife starts dating L.A. Kings star Jacques Grande (Justin Timberlake) out of revenge, sending her husband into a major professional skid — to the horror of the teams’ owner Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba) and Coach Cherkov (Verne Troyer). Pitka must return the couple to marital nirvana and get Roanoke back on his game so the team can break the 40-year-old “Bullard Curse” and win the Stanley Cup.
Myers co-wrote the script featuring his beloved hometown Maple Leafs and shot the film in that city. For the production, the NHL provided Myers and Paramount Pictures unprecedented access and rights, including the use of NHL marks and NHL game action footage, permission and facilitation to film inside NHL arenas, and guest appearances by NHL players and the Stanley Cup, the most revered trophy in all professional sports, marking its first starring turn in a feature film.

It’s a small step away from putting a Paris Hilton smutphoto in “Breakaway” to increase circulation. (No, not that kind)
Honestly, this was the best the NHL could do? Why even bother?
@Jimmy Jazz
Yeah, who does the NHL think they are saying yes to attaching their name and wallets to potentially Austin Powers like popularity and money. Besides, it’s well known that Myers is a HUGE Leafs fan. I’m sure he’s been dreaming for this chance.
This looks like one of the stupidest movies EVER.
I cant wait. : )
Mini-me as a hockey coach?
I assume the Leafs win the Cup in the end? That would be the only way that it would happen. At least during Don Cherry’s lifetime.
This movie had me at Jessica Alba.
Seriously? all i get is a you tube video?! No HD goodness? I mean come on! we’re talking about jessica alba here! I need full screen!!!!

@chanuck: Hey, easy there…there are lots of Leaf fans here on board for the playoff ride, y’know! Please be gentle with our 3 years out of the playoffs damaged egos… (;
My buddy actually worked on that movie. He was working away in the Leafs’ dressing room one day when Borje Salming came walking in. Just because, apparently. Of course he did.
While Jacob makes a fair point and does us a great service by including a link, those HD trailers are not blog friendly.
I do highly suggest visiting the link

and if your monitor can support it, go for 1080p (it’s big, though… 166 MB)
Oops… 1:09 into the trailer, “star hockey player” Darren Roanoke is wearing a practice sweater in a game. 1:11 into the trailer, see the rest of the team wearing the proper home sweater with the superimposed Roanoke donning the practice threads.
He does get a game sweater at 1:14.
Junior, Chanuck is a secondary Sens fan, so you can understand why he feels that way about the Leafs
I’m highly amused by the idea of Justin Timberlake as a hockey player- somehow, I see him making that work.
Wow, and Mike Myers turned down the script for “Sprockets” because he was worried about how bad it was?
Mike, Mike, Mike.
Yeah, this looks pretty terrible. Of course, I recall seeing the original trailers for Austin Powers and thinking, “What godawful crap is this?” but was pleasantly surprised when it was released. So, hopefully, Myers will surprise us again.
early contender for worst movie ever. which is to say, i’ll watch it. probably not in the theater…er…theatre, but i’ll watch it.
Well, at least there are Leafs in the movie. At least there will be something to laugh at.
(Says the guy preparing the obit for the Sens’ season…)
