It’s clear from hearing Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ both in the arena and blaring in the victorious locker room that the Capitals have selected that song as their anthem. OFB wonders what song our readers think best matches the Caps’ accomplishments/challenges this spring. Each of us identified a single song we’d associate with the Caps’ surge and posed it as an option in the poll below. We’ve allowed readers to add their suggestion as well.
Groove out to these inspiring tracks or suggest one of your own:
- Prime Mover - Rush
From the point of ignition
To the final drive
The point of the journey is not to arriveAnything can happen…
- It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n Roll) - AC/DC
It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll
Well it’s a long way
It’s a long way, you should’ve told me
It’s a long way, such a long way
- Stayin’ Alive - Bee Gees
Whether you’re a brother or whether you’re a mother,
You’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive.
Feel the city breakin’ and everybody shakin’,
And we’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive.
- The Rising - Bruce Springsteen
Lost track of how far I’ve gone
How far I’ve gone, how high I’ve climbed
On my back’s a sixty pound stone
On my shoulder a half mile lineCome on up for the rising
Com on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight
- A Beautiful Thing -Tragically Hip
so we talked about things and where they went
big remarkable events
and how each day’s a new day
and they get spent
how you’d continue, artfully, like the breeze
trying to do one true beautiful thing

“Anything Can Happen” - The Finn Brothers
And I will take my chances
‘Cos anything can happen
I don’t believe it’s over
‘Cos anything can happen
I could never
Give it up
I could never relent
And I can’t
Wait to see
What will happen
To me next
I will take my chances
‘Cos anything can happen
I don’t believe it’s over
‘Cos anything can happen

How ’bout G’N'R?
Which G’NR song? “Welcome to the Jungle?” “Patience?” “November Rain?” (The last one would have been appropriate if the season didn’t improve.)
“Don’t Stop Me Now” - Queen
Don’t stop me now I’m having such a good time
I’m having a ball don’t stop me now
If you wanna have a good time
Just give me a call
Don’t stop me now (’Cause I’m having a good time)
Don’t stop me now (Yes I’m having a good time)
I don’t wanna stop at all
If I were to choose a Rush song I might go with The Enemy Within:
“I’m not giving in to security under pressure
I’m not missing out on the promise of adventure
I’m not giving up on implausible dreams
Experience to extremes
Experience to extremes…”
Nice work, pepper!
Indeed, pepper.
My first CD purchase back in the mid 80s (two discs in the same trip)…
Grace Under Pressure - Rush
The Planets - Gustav Holst
Call me a Philistine, but Gawd, we’ve got to lose “Don’t Stop Believin’” Sorry, guys, but that schamltzy crap gives me the dry heaves. And as my gf pointed out, that’s really Lacavelier & St Louis’s song.
Me? I like R-E-S-P-E-C-T by Aretha Franklin. It’s been long overdue, and is something the NHL is finally giving the Caps.
+1, Victor.
Like anything by the Eagles and the Stones, I never need to hear DSB again for as long as I live.
Why not something Russian for our crew of Rooskies?
I always associated “Runnin’ Down a Dream” with games at the old Caps Centre. “Goin’ wherever it leads” … all the way into the post-season, with a bullet!
Russian? How about the song from last year’s Worlds?
Andrew,
How about this?
Or this!

It might be better!
Rammstein - Moscow.
D, I’m hooked!
pucks,
You never know. Maybe the Caps will pick it up. It’s a catchy energentic tune. For all the “Rooskies” on the team.
Careful, now. Inclusion of the Bee Gees is grounds for getting your creds revoked.
Aw, why you gotta hate on the Bee Gees?!?
Vogs,
Process of elimination might land you on the correct blogger who chose it…. although it was highly seconded by another.
I’ll take a guess that you did not vote for Journey.
Dang, SovSport beat me to my t.A.T.u. joke! But no matter, I’ve got a backup:
Anyone else notice “America” and “Capitals” both have three syllables? Yes? Therefore, I propose a re-write to, “America-F*** Yeah!” from “Team America: World Police”
Funniest thing about comment #20: America has FOUR syllables.
Love that movie though!
Funniest thing about comment #20: America has FOUR syllables.
Not if you start counting from zero.
No?
Crap. Re-write it anyway!
DCSC,
Not that Vogs needs anyone to speak for him, but I’ll offer my opinion on why it is perfectly acceptable to hate on the Bee Gees:
They took their considerable songwriting talent and purposefully fed the evil beat known as disco. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it consume your destiny.
Uh, make that evil beast.
Although I guess beat kinda works, too…..
How about Aiming High by Accept? It’s from the album “Russian Roulette”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr1xH7ltwXg
Getting in the heat
Coming with the beat
And I love what I feel
Hard and heavy
And I’m moving on and on
’cause my life is on the run
Now I feel the need to cry
Oh, yeah - I’m aiming high
Longing all my life
Waiting for a friend
Who is fighting like I do
Likes to do it hard and heavy
It’s a man’s, man’s world
Filled with love and pain
And he never gets enough
And that keeps him very tough
Aiming high - aiming high
And I’m waiting for relieve
To the best of my believe
Aiming high - aiming high
What a fight to get it right
For a minute of delight

Hmmm, I’ve never particularly liked “Runnin’ Down a Dream” as a theme song (although Tom Petty is somewhat godlike in my mind) because of this:
Runnin’ down a dream
That never would come to me
As for “Don’t Stop Believin’” being a cheesy song…of course it is. It’s the ultimate schmaltz. But isn’t that fitting for a team whose run is the stuff that sappy Disney movies are made of? Forget Lecavalier and St. Louis, those two can just use “Happy Together” by the Turtles. Or how about this jingle?
“Don’t Stop Believing”’s been stuck in my head all day. So I’d have to go with that.
“U-Way!” by the Youngbloodz
http://dcoptimist.blogspot.com/2008/04/hit-club-make-folks-scream-hu-et.html
I added the LL Cool J:
“Don’t call it a comeback/I been here for years/Rockin my peers and puttin suckas in fear”
@ Scott: Terrific addition!
Ooh, I like the LL Cool J suggestion too!
@ Scott:
DAMAGE! (Canes game)
DAMAGE! (Bolts game)
DAMAGE! (Panthers game)
Haha - nice, Bobtimist!
U-Way all the way.
I’m with the Journey haters here. But hell, whatever gets the Caps there is fine by me. I guess most of the team isn’t old enough to know that liking Journey in a non-ironic fashion is supposed to be embarassing
This one is for the OnFrozenBlog staff, you guys have done an excellent job with covering the Caps this year. And no you have not been Rick Roll’d.
“Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you”
I’ll be pulling for the Caps tonight, Saturday, and hopefully in the postseason. Great work guys.
Thank you, Mr. Plank! We aim to please. Though now I have a Rick Astley song in my head, so I’m not so sure if I should be thanking you . . .
Not worth adding to the milieu, but I’ve been hearing “Hold on Hope” by Guided By Voices in my head since leaving the game tonight. Kind of the American (via Ohio) version of the Hip, in a way. Not particularly relevant to these proceedings, though I bet Vogs knows the song.
The Song for Sunday:
The Eels’ “Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues”
G**damn right it’s a beautiful day
G**damn right it’s a beautiful day
How about The Red by Chevelle? There’s a set of lyrics in it that goes:
The threat is real
When his sight
Goes red again
They could show Ovie staring into the camera during those lyrics.
Out of the songs in the poll above, how can you not go with Bon Scott playing the bagpipes on a flatbed truck!?!
its funny that Nick Backstrom would be adopt this song (Dont Stop Believing) for the team, my daughters name is Journey, middle name Alexa after Ovechkin, and i own a Backstrom jersey. ahh how the world works.
Journey?! You’ve got to be kidding me. Ever since the Sopranos finale that song is dead to me. There’s only one song that comes to mind when we lay the division clinching smackdown on Florida tommorrow night.
VICTORY - NOTORIOUS BIG
“…No respect squeeze off ’til all y’all diminish,
Shootouts for twenty minutes, until we finish…”
