Bengt Gustafsson Visits Washington D.C.

As pucksandbooks and I enjoyed our pregame meal in the Verizon Center, we received a pleasant surprise as hockey great Bengt Gustafsson entered the room. We were fortunate enough to interview the former Washington Capital and current Head Coach of Sweden's national team during the first intermission of the Capitals' victory over the Calgary Flames.

While the audio is less than ideal due to the ambient noise, we wanted to share this clip in which Gustafsson discusses Nicklas Backstrom's progress in the NHL, as well as a Swedish prospect projected as a first-round pick in this year's NHL draft: Anton Gustafsson. According to Gustafsson, his son "is a little better skater than I was, and bigger too . . . he's got a lot of advantage [over] me!"

We are Caps fans from way back (season tix for 20 years in the Cap Centre days), and one of my top 5 hockey moments is seeing Gus deke by Gaston Gingras to score the winning goal in the Caps first-ever win over the Canadiens. We had champagne in the Capitals Club after the game.

Thanks for sharing the excitement guys -- it was terrific seeing him back in D.C. last night. Now if only the Caps are lucky enough to draft his son Anton, we may see him here a lot more often.

That WAS great seeing him on Wednesday...when they had all his highlights up on the board I thought he had to be in the building, and yes, there he was! My first hockey game ever he scored a shorty against Hextall...plenty of great memories of Gus.

elaborating on the first win over the Canadiens...the Caps, up to then, were something like 0-49-2 against Montreal, having been stuffed in the odd division with Montreal, Detroit, LA, etc. When it became evident the Caps were going to win, the Canadien players began to tap their sticks on the ice as a tribute as time ran out. The crowd went nuts. And I believe the Canadiens either stayed on the ice applauding or formed a line to congratulate the Caps. It was an amazing night.
