ARLINGTON, Va. –The Washington Capitals have acquired left wing Matt Cooke from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for left wing Matt Pettinger, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Cooke, 29, has spent all nine of his NHL seasons in Vancouver. He heads to Washington with seven goals and nine assists in 61 games this year.
The Belleville, Ontario, native has played in 566 career games and has scored 83 goals and dished out 120 career assists. He has also appeared in 32 career playoff games, scoring eight goals and recording 12 points.
Cooke was a sixth-round choice of the Canucks, 144th overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut on Oct. 14, 1998, against Edmonton and played in 30 games during the 1998-99 season. Cooke spent parts of the 1998-99 and 1999-00 seasons with the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League before joining Vancouver full time.

Wait! I’m confused..what about our holes in defense?
We probably won’t even notice Pettinger is gone but did we have to trade for Yertle the Turtle? Ugh.
And did you really believe the “standing pat” excuse?
Though I’m wishing the defense might be covered here…quelle aggrivating.
I always believed Pettinger would come back alive with a few SHG this year but it hasn’t happened. Seems like an even trade to me but Cooke is older by 2 years.
Aside from the ladies losing a piece of eye candy; the rest of us see nothing wrong with this trade…
If nothing else, I’m glad to see one of the last remaining members of those pre-fire sale Caps teams depart.
having watched many Western Conf games on satellite, what people don’t seem to realize is that Matt Cooke is one of the best and hardest body checkers in the league when he is on his game…. he has speed to get to the hits and makes them count… on flip side he has little scoring touch and doesn’t back up the dirty hits by fighting … but he can be very difficult to play against.
