Segway Take Me Away: Ahead, More Madness from Metro

Gallery Place Metro StationYou thought Metro service was frustrating last weekend? Well, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
If you have tickets for Saturday night’s game with the ‘Cats and plan on taking Metro, please read on.
Metro is giving travelers the gift of major delays this MLK holiday weekend, with maintenance work disrupting train schedules from Friday, January 18, 10 p.m., to Monday, January 21, midnight.

Red, Blue and Orange Line customers should build 30 minutes of extra travel time into their schedules this weekend as Metro officials work to fix the sagging Red Line platform at Metro Center.

For more details on the modified single-track schedule, check out Metro’s website.
To his credit, Metro spokeman Steven Taubenkibel was commendably frank with the Washington Post on Thursday:

“[Riders] should bring a good book, and patience, while riding the rail system this weekend.”

There seems to be a lot of issues with the Metro of late, but the reality is that it needs to be serviced and maintained sometimes. Thanks for the heads up. But for those who continuously want to complain about it, you can always drive (which really isn’t that bad) or stay home and watch the game from the comfort of your living room.

  2. True enough Amy. The system is overall great, though I do wonder sometimes about Metro’s priorities… such as their recent touting of the new-style metro cars, yet delays are rampant throughout the system.
For this Saturday, though, we just hope everyone will plan ahead and leave early (or drive) to avoid missing part of the game. As the old G.I. Joe cartoons ended each episode, “Knowing is half the battle!” :)

So now that I’m paying more for my metro fare and my parking does that mean that once this stuff gets fixed the trains will be on time and everything will be honkey dorey? Somehow I doubt it!
Sorry, I’m bitter about the price hike!

Well, here’s hoping that they add extra trains on the Yellow line to handle all the people switching from the Blue Line.

I used to live in DC and still visit regularly, so I know the Metro ain’t perfect. But my dear Washington friends, at least you have a Metro that is clean, is in relatively good repair, covers most of the city, and does important things like service a major local airport. The Toronto subway does not pass any of those tests–it was designed in the 1950s, and hasn’t changed much since. Count your blessings, my friends. :-)
