Summer of Change, Autumn of Return?

Washington Capitals Sweater - WhiteBuried in Wednesday’s news of the three-game home winning streak, Joe Motzko’s offensive explosion, and Mike Green’s overtime winner was this gem of a nugget:

Autumn Sweaters – Given the choice to return to using the same fabric that was used in hockey sweaters prior to this season rather than the ultra-hyped “uniform systems” that were introduced league-wide prior to this season, every single member of the Caps went with last year’s fabric. Wednesday night marked the first time the new (old) sweater fabric was made available, and every member of the Caps had the new model sweater with the old fabric hanging in his locker prior to the game.

  1. Slimmer-fitting jerseys but with the tried-and-true material? This makes so much sense that I’m surprised Bettman didn’t veto the idea.

It wasn’t Hanlon! It isn’t Boudreau! It’s the uniform systems, stupid!

  3. I’ll wager a dinner at Sam & Harry’s that come next fall the fuller cut is back as well. Now there’s simply no justification for going tight now.

Imagine, we might have to behold Mike Green rushing up the ice next season with his SWEATER flapping in his Lear Jet breeze.

This is pretty hilarious, really. I can’t believe that nobody in the league offices has admitted this system to be a failure yet. At least OV won’t have to wear 12 gloves per game anymore.

…I wonder how long before they try to sell us the new jerseys made of the old material for twice as much.

Brash’s jersey seemed to tear pretty easily with the “old” jersey material. Where is the blogosphere about that one?

Ace, I noted that as well and forgot to add it to pucks’ knee-jerks.

  7. Yikes, a tear in a sweater of old fabric? The game must have been stopped! That never happened in the old days, right? Trainers didn’t have stashed needle and thread on benches, no sir.

In point of fact, one of the greatest charms of purchasing game-worns is for the repair work performed on them — it bears a searing stamp of actually being battle-tested.

  8. I asked Tarik about this in his chat today on the post’s website.

I sent the question to Vogs for Caps Report Wednesday and he didn’t use it. I sent it again for today’s PreCap, but haven’t listened to it yet to know if he addressed it.
