A Haven for the Hockey Malnourished

The coldest days best warm my hockey heart

Jerks from the Stands: Thrashers, 12/8

  • Jerks from the StandsIt's hard to keep track of knee-jerk notes when you attend the game with your four year old son AND your 3 week old son.
  • Two words: Free and Wings
  • The pre-game Kids Club festivities were a bit disorganized, perhaps they were not expecting as many to show up as they did. I was surprised at the number of participants. I didn't sign up our oldest until a few weeks after it started and his membership number is barely into the double digits.... as it turns out, there are about 500 members.
  • Speaking of the Kids Club, the Caricature Artist was doing a great job.
  • There was an autograph session with the Kids Club event, injured Boyd Gordon was one of the participants. He managed to fight through the cast on the hand to sign the kids' wares. I asked him how much longer he'll be on the shelf. He told me about two more weeks.
  • The shot clock didn't work through the entire first period. Annoying.
  • Black curtains still hang over the ends of the ribbon light boards around the bottom ring. What gives?
  • The soccer "ole" song was not played after any of the six goals. The odd numbered goals got Kernkraft 400's "Zombie Nation" while the even numbered goals were celebrated to the chorus of Blur's "Song 2". The Fifth Line may be the only ones upset by the change.
  • The team looked like they were playing together as a unit. Have we seen the "Boudreau System" clicking for the first time?

BallHype: hype it up!

a convincing victory for all those kids probably makes up for all the technical glitches ... though i imagine the kids missed hearing the ole song ....

The newest addition to your family is absolutely adorable. Section 426 is fairly blooming with younguns! And also among the missing was "The Hockey Song" although I enjoyed the film clips used to punctuate our displeasure when the Thrashers scored. :-)

From the ESPN web site...

Vocabulary builder: Green had a *brace* of goals to lead Washington to a 6-3 victory.

It's obvious now that the NHL schedulers don't want the Caps to win and here's the proof: "... Washington had not won on Dec. 8 since beating Calgary in 1983. The Capitals are 2-8-1 on that date."

Thanks, Steph

I couldn't believe that we made it the whole game without a meltdown from either kid (although we did leave with 4 min left to avoid the sea of humanity with the littlest fan)

A four year old, a three week old, AND a Capitals fan? You must have the patience of a saint!

Ha! Thanks Wilkins!

Add to that a blog, a side business and a "real job", some may just say that I'm crazy.

I wonder if there is a patron saint of hockey blogging entreprenures who are dads. If not, I think we have a nominee!

The Kid's Club sounds like fun for the kids. It's pretty cool that our injured players can still show up & give of their time in some capacity.

The Verizon Center has been having problems w/ the shot clock since the new scoreboard went up. The software has been giving them problems--during the first pre-season game, the off-ice officials spent a lot of time on the phone w/ the software support people in NY.

I was amazed how much Backstrom's goal looked like Pothier's gaffe the other night. Bad pass up the slot resulting in a goal, only for the good guys this time.
