A guy looking to impress a girl on date night would do well to consider Saturday night in Chinatown. He could spend less than $100 on two terrific seats for Tampa tomorrow night. We who criticize the high cost of pro hockey also call out its great deals, and this is a great promotion by the Washington Capitals: $40 for lower level seats.

Good idea, but as the son of a season ticket holder, I think this is bad business. It absolutely devalues the Caps tickets, and makes season tickets less valuable. I applaud the Caps for trying to fill the place, but why buy season tickets, and good ones at that, when there is always a good deal on tickets available?
I know, its a double edged sword. You want to grow the product, and get more fans in, but you also have to respect those who pay full price for every game.
Good point about season-ticket holders, but even so…a building with empty seats is worse for the club in the long run, is it not?
BTW, even your season-ticket prices are enough to make a Canadian hockey fan cry.

This is the first instance in my recollection of the Ted-owned Caps that the team has offered so sizable a discount for a home Saturday night in the lower bowl. Does the heavy discounting of a single game, out of 41, truly “devalue” the season ticket in your judgment?
I was just about to say the same thing pucks did. They are taking the opportunity to do something they haven’t done before… on a Saturday… against a team that has been drawing the smallest crowd for the last two years.
I would agree with you if it were a discount applied every Saturday or some other regularity. As a season ticket holder myself, I do not feel slighted in any way.
Let’s hope a good number of people will give this promotion a shot, and turn them into partial or full season plans. It certainly can’t hurt.
They also have the student nights, government nights, etc. It seems like there is always someway to get cheap tickets. No more LaSooz nights, though (thank goodness)
Like I said, its a tough situation. On one hand, you dont want to devalue the season tickets. On another hand, you want to get people in, have them love what they see, and return many times over.
Theres no right or wrong answer, just lots of opinions. Hopefully they get a good crowd tonight, and, more importantly, a win!
I am a season ticket holder… and I have my tickets for every game, at more than 20% less than face value. If Ted wants to try and fill the place one night out of 41 then so be it. Doesn’t impact my seats one bit. Devalue the tickets? I didn’t buy them for an investment… I know the price, I know the product (sometimes), and I make my buying decision accordingly.
