Long-time Washington Capital Peter Bondra has officially announced his retirement today. He takes of the mantle of General Manager for his native Slovakian National Team; he’ll be in Halifax for the IIHF World Championships in 2008. For more, click here.
UPDATE: Check out Ted Leonsis’s blog for his recent lunch with Bonzai and the Capitals’ discussions regarding “a series of things to do together” with him.

I hope the Caps find some way to honor the long time Cap sniper.
Yeah, after a great career, he went out with a wimper. I was hoping the Caps would bring him back to score No. 500.
My favorite Bondra memory will be seeing him score #500 in Chicago. Even though he had only been here a few weeks, the crowd gave a roaring “BONDRA! BONDRA!” chant.
As Dale Hunter received a penalty box as a parting gift, what fitting gift would Bondra receive from the team?
Great question Pepper! While nothing will top Dale Hunter’s penalty box, I’m sure folks could come up with something good… perhaps a silver-plated sculpture of some kind made of 502 pucks? Though I think Bonzai would be happy with just getting the banner into the rafters.
Bondra can have the stain on my carpet where I spilled my pizza when he scored the overtime winner against Buffalo.
Since many teams are banishing them to the press box, perhaps he can have one goal judge booth, seat and light. Obviously saving the other for #8.
The Capitals have posted a Bondra Photo Gallery, check it out:
