I like watching him skate, but I think 4.6 mil/yr is a little high for a power play specialist. Looking over his stats last year he scored over half of his points on the PP. Of his 73pts, 21g and 14a were not on the pp.
Compaired to AO who had 1/3 of his goals on the pp.
I guess this means AO will be looking for between 5.5 and 7 mil/yr.
Again, I like the player but think he is still overpaid...hope I am wrong. Your thoughts?

MM, you make a good point. But with the number of penalties called so high, a solid PP is critical. If Semin stays healthy (admittedly a big "if") his totals will continue to rise.

As for AO, I think around $8M per year is more likely, given the rising cap and Crosby's recent deal. But no word on that situation yet.

Re: Semin & PP points...Semin mainly played last season with the likes of Kris Beech, Jakub Klepis, Matt Pettinger and the like. I don't think we quite yet have an accurate reading on how dangerous Semin can be during even-strength play just yet.

It's not a stellar deal but it works. I can understand why maybe the front office was a little hesitant to lock him up long-term, though we don't know if that was indeed the case or not.

I'll go out on a limb and predict 4 years, $36M for Ovechkin. Semin would probably have 3 or 4 goals had he not been injured. Just think what a good center could do for him!!
Not sure yet about Kozlov. He just doesn't look very comfortable - maybe the move to RW tonight will help? Yikes, what would we do if tonight's first line combo is dynamite, change it up again?

SovSport, can you get us any additional information? Is it a re-injury of the same ankle? Man, this is not good. Poti, Clark & Semin all hurting and a bunch of games on the road.

I had a chance to speak with Alexander (we actually exchanged SMS messages). He said it was his "leg". I am quite sure it is the same ankle.

I feel bad for Semin. I don't want him rushed back in the lineup again. Let it heal properly. No skating for 30 days, minimum. Plenty of therapy. Hopefully, there is no structural damage or bone chips and he won't require surgery.

Great deal for the Caps. Semin falls in the Vanek category - would have gotten a huge contract offer had he become an RFA in the off-season. No way is he a powerplay specialist (that's somebody who plays fourth line minutes 5 on 5 and then on the power play, like Carolina's Jeff Hamilton). Ovechkin got three minutes (= 25%) more of even strength time per game than Semin while on the PP the were about even. That, plus their respective linemates, accounts for the difference in even strenght points. In my view Semin is a unique, extremely talented player who can light it up no matter with or against whom he is playing. Just think about it - 38 goals playing with Kris Beech!

Semin is my fave, no doubt. $9.2 will get him back in the lineup when ready cuz of his ankle injury. He in ovie could be extremely powerful on the PP this year. all we need is to sign ovie and make some magic (when he recovers for the sprain of course)
