A Haven for the Hockey Malnourished

The coldest days best warm my hockey heart

My, How Times Have Changed

A quick "This Day in History" observation: 33 years ago today, the newly-formed Washington Capitals lost to the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden, thus beginning the Caps' 37-game road losing streak during their painful inaugural season.

The 2007-08 Capitals resemble that newborn squad in no way other than the red, white, and blue uniforms. Unlike the team's ragtag beginnings, this year's incarnation is lighting up the league (and opposing goaltenders). The season is young, but the outlook is bright; it is a very, very good time to be a Capitals fan.

So which would be considered the Capitals' birthday? (from the Capitals' Franchise Timeline)

  • June 9, 1972: Abe Pollin is granted the right to bring an NHL hockey team to Washington.

  • October 9, 1974: Capitals play their first ever game, losing 3-6 to the New York Rangers in New York.

Or possibly when they signed their first player?
