Clymer to Hershey

The Washington Capitals have announced the assignment of Jame Pollock and Ben Clymer to the Hershey Bears.

The Capitals have 26 players remaining on the roster. Eric Fehr will undoubtedly be placed on the injured reserve meaning that two more cuts (or trades) are on the horizon.

Surprised the blue jackets wouldn’t claim him. They could use a veteran guy like Clymer.

  4. Yes, the 25 includes the unsigned Klepis.

I agree, Clymer’s a good vet; I’m a little surprised nobody picked him up, though his salary’s a little high.

On the post blog, someone mentioned that you can pick up a vet off of waivers coming back in for less. Could that be a reason why? Is this even true?

    VT Caps Fan,

If I have this correct (and I think I played just enough EHM to be dangerous here), it’s preferable to get a vet coming up through the waiver wire, because then you essentially get him at 50% off (the original team covers half his salary).

If you really wanted someone, you’d probably take them on the way down just in case, but I imagine for a lot of bubble players that discount is a large factor in whether they get picked up off the wire or not.

so, one more to go (i’m assuming klepis is dead)? tough call between bradley and laich. i think i’d keep laich b/c he seems to have more upside.

Unfortunately, Pgreene, Bradley and Laich would both have to clear waivers, and since they’re not on the wire now, they’re not going to be. Unless there’s a trade, it’s going to have to be from Green, Steckel, or Schultz.

i forgot the deadline for waiving them had passed. based on camp alone, i don’t see how it’s not schultz who goes down, “buy a house” notwithstanding.

Well I think them waiving Clymer totally disproves the waiver eligible theory. They are keeping the best players….regardless. It’s a welcomed practice in my opinion.

Id like to salute Clymer for his service, you cant say that the guy didnt give his all while he was here.

Ill always remember he was the first guy in to stick up for Green when he got clocked in that Atlanta brawlfest.

    Ben Clymer I salute you

Strungout, that applied until approximately noon today. I was sure they’d love to keep the best players too, but the fact is that there is now no way without a trade for them to move anyone else through waivers before the deadline tomorrow.

Unless they’re going to be up to some trickery with the IR, or they trade somebody, I don’t think there is any actual way that they can go without sending down two waiver-exempt players. Even if it’s temporary while they sort other personnel issues, I think it’s still a slap in the face to Green and Steckel if it happens.

I’d be really disappointed in the front office if they do that, though; I’d like to think McPhee thinks farther ahead than that.

My money is still on a trade tomorrow morning, though the closer we get to 3 PM the more convinced I’m going to be that we’re going to be trying to offload warm bodies for minimal return, which would be disappointing.

If Semin’s ankle is bad enough, they may place him on IR to save 1 more spot and delay that decision for a couple of regular season games.
