1972 Summit Series -- 35th Anniversary DVD
Christmas shopping for hockey fans can begin early this year. Ficel Marketing is planning a DVD release of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the former USSR. This September marks the 35th anniversary of the series.
Plans for the release include all 8 games which were played in both Canada (Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver) and the Soviet Union (Moscow). Also planned include game 2 of the Canada-Sweden exhibition series, which has not been seen since its original broadcast, and a documentary about the series.
Played at the height of the Cold War, the series was the first competition between non-amateur Canadian and Soviet national teams. Coached by Harry Sinden, Canada's roster included Bobby Clarke, Marcel Dionne, Ken Dryden, Phil & Tony Esposito, Stan Mikita, and Gilbert Perreault, to name a few.
Although an official date has not been set, the DVDs should be released this fall."The thrills, the turmoil, the passion, the stunning surprises of that roller coaster ride in '72 caused our emotions to run wild" - Harry Sinden
"This was the greatest series played in ANY sport. This was war!" - Don Cherry
