Christmas shopping for hockey fans can begin early this year. Ficel Marketing is planning a DVD release of the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the former USSR. This September marks the 35th anniversary of the series.
Plans for the release include all 8 games which were played in both Canada (Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver) and the Soviet Union (Moscow). Also planned include game 2 of the Canada-Sweden exhibition series, which has not been seen since its original broadcast, and a documentary about the series.
Played at the height of the Cold War, the series was the first competition between non-amateur Canadian and Soviet national teams. Coached by Harry Sinden, Canada’s roster included Bobby Clarke, Marcel Dionne, Ken Dryden, Phil & Tony Esposito, Stan Mikita, and Gilbert Perreault, to name a few.
Although an official date has not been set, the DVDs should be released this fall.
“The thrills, the turmoil, the passion, the stunning surprises of that roller coaster ride in ’72 caused our emotions to run wild” – Harry Sinden
“This was the greatest series played in ANY sport. This was war!” – Don Cherry

Thats on my list!!!
I so want that. Hear that DCSC?
The DVD was released in Canada a while ago (a few years at least). I own it.
There will be a special on CBC in September about the Series and the impact it had on hockey on both continents. CBC crew traveled to Russia last month to film the second part of the documentary.
Sov, this is a re-release with new material… from their website:
“And, for the first time since the original broadcast, game 2 of the Canada-Sweden exhibition series that also took part during the Summit Series will be included.
“The second game of the Canada vs Sweden series will be included in the DVD set. Its brilliant colour and quality with great camera work. Its quite a find and now it will be shown for the first time since the original airing.”
Awesome. I love new materials! Also, there is a mini series between Canadian and Russian teams in the works. Alzner, I believe, was included in the Canadian roster.
I haven’t personally viewed it yet, but this is another DVD that might be on your list of things to get. I hope to but the exchange rate needs to get a little better first.

Josh Godfrey and Simeon Varlamov will also be taking part in the upcoming Russia-Canada series, set to begin at the end of the month.
I was just watching the 8th and final game of the Summit Series the other day with Foster Hewitt doing the PBP. Great stuff!
I actually have the Canada Russia 72 DVD that chanuck mentioned. Had to special order it. Well worth it. It is a great film.
Now, they say they are releasing this DVD set in the fall- am I going to have to special order it or is it actually going to be released in the US?
I would think in a worst case scenario, you’ll be able to order it from amazon.ca. that’s how I got my copy of the Outdoor Game a few years ago.
