Non long après que mes visites tôt aux capitaux de Kettler cette saison passée j'aient eu quelques discussions avec de divers membres' des rédacteurs des communications de l'équipe au sujet de l'appel général et des possibilités terribles liés au jeu annuel d'élèves d' de chapeaux'. In this shinny new showcase home the game, I told them, could be must-see affair for Caps’ fans of all ages and patronage periods. We all agreed that sooner rather than later the stands would be teeming with puckheads embracing a glimpse of the team’s past.

That alumni game has drawn largely middling participation from Caps past, most commonly of those who’ve remained reasonably near D.C. after their careers ended. But with the team’s uniform unveiling and Entry Draft party last month, we saw the dawning I think of a refreshing embrace of that past, by the team and its alumni, with the likes of Langway, Sylvan Cote, and especially Mike Gartner returning home. I would expect all three to skate in next spring’s Alumni Game, schedules permitting.

Now then, I have this idea for expanding the production values and overall quality of that game. There should be an audio call of it, broadcast in Kettler and on the team’s web site, by a broadcaster lured, for one night, out of his retirement. That same night, this broadcaster should be honored with his own banner raised in the rink. His name is Ron Weber.

    Are round numbers really all that common anyway? Off-hand, I can think only of Robert Clemente having exactly 3,000 hits for his carerr, but he did not drag himself out of (or towards) retirement to reach that number, and then leave.

    If anything, updating Arbour’s name with a clean, crisp 1,500 will look much sillier.

    I have long advocated for some formal and permanent acknowledgement of Ron Weber, only to fall on deaf ears and emails. A banner of “Ms Twiddle” hanging over the goal that the Caps defend twice would be sweet.

    Course, the Bullets/Wizards could have issues with that.

    This is great that Charles Wang respects the history of the NY Islanders like no other owner they’ve had since the glory days. This may be a ‘prank’ but it also honors one of the best coaches in NHL history. Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier are both part of the organization again and there is a great feel around the club. Ted Nolan loves the idea, Garth Snow and Wang love the idea, Arbour loves the idea, the NHL loves the idea and the fans absolutely adore the idea, so what could possibly be wrong with Arbour behind the bench just one more time.
