In a Flash, It's 3-0 Bears: Hershey 4, Manchester 1

Through the first three games of the American Hockey League’s Eastern Conference Finals, the Hershey Bears have potted 14 goals past the league’s netminder of the year, Jason LaBarbera. Tomas Fleischmann continued his torrid pace tonight — a goal and two assists. Look for the Bears to close out this series Saturday night.

The Don't-Forget-About-Us Guys

The Nick Backstrom signing is exciting in and of itself, but it also breeds a bit of an anticipatory momentum: in this summer of change, what’s next? And what’s next may arrive sooner than you think, if you’re inclined to believe that the Caps will sit by idly and patiently await July 1′s arrival. I’ll [...]

A Blogger's Manifesto

We don’t often re-post the well-made points at other blogs, but with the Caps’ owner’s latest, we want it shared with our readers in full: “Of course press rooms and player access should be made available to bloggers! Bloggers are passionate fans. They are very knowledgeable and have a growing audience. They bottle up interactivity [...]

Softer Spoken Than Nick Backstrom: the Washington MSM on a Big Hockey Signing Day

Confession: prior to Monday, I’d never watched ‘Washington Post Live.’ I don’t have a friend or acquaintance who’d admit to the act. I never heard any “must-see” buzz surrounding it, or even any “see it while you’re ironing” buzz, and I’ve been busy this spring doing the work those associated with that program should have [...]

Backstrom Introduced as a Capital

Nicklas Backstrom introduced to the press. I happened to be sitting in the lobby of the Washington Capitals offices when Clan Backstrom made its way in from the bright spring day, and today’s center of attention looked a bit uncomfortable in a dark suit. After being warmly greeted by members of the Caps’ staff, the [...]

The Way Things Oughta Be on the Beat

From my weekend visit to Hershey I had an opportunity to meet Tim Leone, whose work for the Patriot News covering the Bears I’ve admired for years, and John Walton, whose impassioned radio pitch I first encountered last spring during Hershey’s spectacular run to the Calder Cup. There’s a predictable purity to their work outside [...]

Backstrom Pitches a Strike

Per the Caps website: “Washington Capitals center and 2006 first-round draft pick Nicklas Backstrom threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Washington Nationals-Baltimore Orioles game this afternoon at RFK Stadium. Backstrom, a native of Gavle, Sweden, attending his first baseball game, delivered a strike over the plate in front of the crowd of 29,281 [...]

Moscow Bonus – Canada Gold

As we mentioned before our trip to Moscow, OFB would serve as the “DVD extras” to supplement the Caps’ official coverage of the IIHF World Championships, including photos and observations that didn’t make the cut for Caps’ site. Here’s the first in a series of those extras: photos of the Gold medal-winning Canadian team. IIHF [...]
