Finnish blueliner Sami Lepisto has signed with the Washington Capitals. Lepisto, the 66th pick in the 2004 draft, had been playing with Jokerit in his native country. A decidedly offensive defenseman, Lepisto has a low, hard shot and has been used on the point for his SM-ligga team, and is a gifted puck-mover whose skills work well on the power play. The 22-year-old, who will turn 23 in October, was named the best defenseman in the 2004 World Junior Championships.

Lepisto’s size may be a concern — listed at 5′11″ and 176 pounds, he may have trouble with North American-style forwards at the professional level. He already has considerable professional experience in his short career, having played for Jokerit’s top team for four seasons.

The signing also adds to a bit of a logjam as far as young, talented blueliners go — Patrick McNeill and Sean Collins have also signed with the Caps, and some of the youngsters may spend time in the Caps’ ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays. It should be noted, however, that having too many young defensemen with potential may be a good problem to have.

Update: According to Tarik El-Bashir’s blog Lepisto is most likely destined for Hershey, though will be given a chance to make the Caps out of camp.
