[...] Likely we won’t see a blockbuster like last June’s Panthers’ dealing of Roberto Luongo (for junk; and we may not see such lopsidedness again in this lifetime). Then again, we may see Patrick Marleau moved. The game within the game taking place now through next Friday night involves the leagues GMs sorting through their UFA and RFA lists, comparing last season’s payroll with ‘07-’08’s projected cap, and charting a course for correction and improvement. For some clubs, payroll will be pared and some prime players moved. For others (the Caps), payroll will increase, assets added. A fair bit of this correction will take place over the course of the next 10 days. [...]

I think the Caps need to substantially improve next year or risk losing Ovechkin. I don't think it's a case of money; he will get maximum dollars. He does not like to lose. Marleau, if only for a year, would certainly be welcome. Question is --- what would San Jose ask in return? It may be time to roll the dice and take a chance.

Well, it would fill one of the big holes, and leave room in the salary cap for the primo defenseman they need. I think that unless they're asking for the moon, you've got to do it. Otherwise, what's the point of acquiring all those assets if you never turn them into something good! Baby steps, baby steps...

Remember guys, just because a guy has a year left on his deal doesn't mean ipso facto he walks at the end of it. What if a Marleau or his ilk came here and really dug the town and the room? There have been plenty of guys in that position who've re-upped. But it's a risk, no denying.

Its somewhat painful for me to say, because Hanlon has been a good coach for a team who was (until hopefully this season), below the level of real NHL contention, but if it were possible to bring back Wilson, man, I'd be on that bandwagon.

How can a Caps fan truly not love the guy, and not at least think about his return if he's available?

If you can get it done for those two pieces, you do it in a second in my opinion.

I think it would cost more...
I'd go upwards of 3 prime parts for him, though I think San Jose will be looking for established talent as they are very deep in young talent.

I don't know; Marleau would certainly improve the team, but man, that's a lot to give up for a guy who's going to be able to walk at the end of the year. I think I'd rather have Green or Fleischmann and whoever gets picked 5th overall for multiple years than Marleau for just one year, especially considering where we are the rebuilding process. If we do make this kind of trade this summer, I'd hope it'd be for something that fits a little better into the long-term plan.

My apologies, upon rereading, I see you account for the one year contract (by saying that he be here for one year and walk) - the 2008-2009 line was very confusing.

It seems like a lot of the discussion hinges on Marleau's contract expiring after 08-09. Unfortunately, that isn't the case - he hits his UFA status on July 1, 2008 so you are looking at one year of Marleau in trade and a contract that comes due at the same time that Ovechkin and Semin are due their raises.
