The Caps Report and Tarik El-Bashir’s blog are confirming that Swedish center Nicklas Backstrom will be in town on Monday to sign a contract with the Caps. There will be a press conference presenting Backstrom to the media.
Not a huge shock, but it’s good to see it’s going to get done. Backstrom’s signing fills a center position, and Backstrom’s play-making, two-way game and hockey sense will be a welcome addition to the 2007-08 Caps.

Is the presser open to the public and is it at the Ice plex? (working in ballston rocks)
Unfortunately, it looks like the presser is -not- open to the public. Once there’s a press release up, I’ll link it.
One center down, one to go. I hope.
I wouldn’t mind having Backstrom as my first “new” Caps jersey.
I’m with TG. My next jersey will be of Backstrom with the new unis. Last one I bought was back in ’92 and was Bondra’s, heh.
according to the caps’ website, backstrom is throwing out the first pitch at the nats’ game Sunday.
