Think of it as the counterpart to Mites on ice.
The 4th Annual Gerihatricks Tournament will be held this coming weekend at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Maryland. According to their web site, the Gerihatricks are “a loosely knit group of senior hockey players, 60 plus and 70 plus years of age.” They competed in the Senior Olympics in Lake Placid in 1999 and won the championship in 2000.
Teams expected to participate in this years’ tournament hail from Minnesota, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, and Virginia. There are three age brackets: 50s, 60s, and 70-plus.
The Gerihatticks’ team speed is expected to be improved for this year’s tournament, as pucksandbooks’ father remains on IR for it. “Lower body injury” — and pretty much everywhere else in between — is how the team is classifying it.
Tournament sponsor The Wharf Rat Restaurant, with its flagship product Oliver Ale, will be providing draft beer after every game. Guys who’ve demonstrated this duration of love for the game deserve a cold one or two after the games, don’t you think?
