One of the more intriguing issues of The Hockey News is its “Future Watch“ edition, now on newsstands. The issue details the progress of recently drafted, expected future stars of the NHL. Like vintage years for wine, there are vintage ones for 18-year-old hockey prospects. But THN also took a look back 10 years to the players that were ranked as the top 50 prospects in 1997. We were struck by how many of the top 25 have passed through Washington. Some stayed longer than others. Some Alexanders are not as great as others.
Players are listed with their current team and NHL games played as of 1 February 2007.

I still remember that last game of the season where Svejkosky scored 4 or 5 goals against Buffalo…
Nolan has since moved - he’s with us down here in Dallas now showin’ him some NHL love
I remember Volchkov and Bulis as linemates with the OHL Barrie Colts. I never would have thought back then that Bulis would be the one who would make it.
It’s like a monument to our suffering.
Usiel - the 10th anniversary of that 4 goal game is a month away…April 13, 1997.
I believe I heard that Yogi joined the Vancouver Giants as an asst coach earlier this season.
Jason Doig?!
