And the winner is…

Conventional wisdom states that the true “winner” in a trade isn’t known for several years. But OFB doesn’t claim to be conventional (or wise), so we ask you: Who made the best moves this February?

By this we mean moves that will help right now, i.e., the next few months. Draft picks and prospects are not considered relevant for the 2007 playoffs. Several of these teams mortgaged their futures, true; but who added the best assets for a Cup run right now?

The biggest movers are listed below. Choose one, and feel free to explain your choice in the comments.

Which team's acquisitions will help them the most this year?

  1. IMO the Sharks did the most to improve. That doesn’t necessarily make them favorites over Detroit or Nashville in the West, but it seems the players they added bring the greatest net increase in talent of any team’s acquisitions.

  2. “It definitely gives you a little boost,” Zubrus said. “With the last couple of years in Washington, you don’t get to experience the playoffs or a real hockey atmosphere. This is a very good change for me. I’m very excited.”

    Enough said—silly caps fans.

Keller you left out the next sentence he said in his quote, “And now that I’m here with a team that recognizes talent, lets talk about that 5 year deal I need to help get through the playoffs.” (sarcasm)

Either way, I’d have to say its the Isles. While I think the Sharks added some good pieces, the Isles got the best player available (Forsberg’s close when healthy) for 2 guys who do have upside. Now if they can resign him, that’s a coup and a half.

Nashville. If Forsberg stays healthy (stop that laughing!) they added the best player that changed teams this season. I know Smyth’s got his backers, but honestly, can he really change a game the way Forsberg can? Although if Guerin can get Thornton really going again…

Tough call! I’d have to say Pittsburgh. If Laracque provides the kind of protection for Crosby that everyone is expecting, and if Roberts provides the kind of leadership he is expected to provide, the Pens are arguably in the “biggest impact” category. But SJ and the Isles are in that category, too.

thinking on it a tad, the Red Wings moves could pay off big time. A healthy Bertuzzi and a Calder scoring could be significant.
