Leading up to Sunday’s national televised contest on NBC between the Caps and Pens, the hype machine is gearing up for abnormal Caps coverage. The NHL’s website is no exception with Larry Wiggie’s column a must read, if nothing more than for the player and management quotes.
“He’s Pavel Bure in Mark Messier’s body,” said Capitals General Manager George McPhee …
Brendan Shanahan said … “Is he the face of the future? You bet.”
Wayne Gretzky said … “You can’t knock him over and you can’t out-skate him.”
“He creates chances by himself … out of nothing,” said Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo.

Anyone else notice how some writers are especially liberal with their airbrushing of Ovie’s less-than-perfect English in their articles? I personally can’t stand it … it kills some of that quirky awkwardness that us Cap fans know and love.
For instance:
“Its like there’s a motor inside that drives me to work harder and a voice in my brain (he pauses and points to his head to laugh at this point) that has me thinking a couple of moves ahead,” Ovechkin laughed. “When you’re born from great athletes, I think you have kind of a sixth sense when you play. I have my mom and dad to thank for that.”
In reality, that had to have come out more like:
“It’s like there’s motor inside … make me work harder. And … uhhh, voice in my brain (he pauses and points to his head to laugh at this point) that make me think, ahhh, couple of move ahead,” Ovechkin laughed. “When you make born from great athlete, I think you have - how do you say - sixth sense? When you play … thanks mom and dad.”
Personally, I prefer the quotes to be glazed-over, rather than see them printed in their original Brenglish. The actual quotes may be fun for Capitals fans, but for a (hopefully) international audience like the readers of NHL.com, it helps to have quotes that make sense.
We should worry more about the poor editing done on NHL.com overall: “stilling learning English” … “Eastern-block” … “who finished third with 52 goals and 106 points” (third in … ?)
