Attack of the 80-foot Ovechkin

On the corner of 13th & L Streets Northwest hangs this huge Ovechkin banner. It’s seven stories high — about 80′ for #8, perhaps? — and brings a smile to my face every time I walk by on my way to work… a fitting advertisement for a player of his stature. Thought you’d enjoy a photo of the building, so here it is:

  1. Nice to see. I’ll never forget going to the Verizon Center and seeing a similar picture of David Robinson in a Spurs uniform across the street. Finally a local icon is honored.

Very nice indeed. I’ve never seen the banner in daylight, as I’m only usually in the area for game nights, so thanks for the pic!

Michael Grass of the Express website’s FreeRide section postulates that Ovie’s stature may have been aided by the 7-3 defeat of the Hurricanes:

The article also contains a link to preliminary discussions about Verizon Center upgrades (including a new scoreboard), check it out.

That advertisement only further illustrates the ridiculous illegibility of the nameplates on the Caps’ sweaters.

  7. That’s an awesome poster and picture. I borrowed it for my blog. It took 20? years in Detroit to put the pic of Yzerman of that size on the building.
I am glad Alex is advertising AIM pages. That helped Washington to get ahead in this. :-)
