Caps Go After Niedermeyer (and Otter)

belushi.jpgConsistent critics of pro hockey ticket prices, we also praise well-conceived and meaningful discount schemes, and the Caps have a new one. Targeting the poorest among us (college kids), the Caps this week announced that for the remainder of the season those in possession of a valid college ID can get into the team’s remaining home games — all of them — for $21 each, and get a free large pizza to boot.

Double Secret Admission?

We’re thinking about taking some classes.

And to kick things off, for this Saturday’s home date with the ‘Canes, the Caps will allow in free the first 368 collegians who present themselves at Verizon Center, and dole out more free pizza.

Gives a whole new range of possibilities to the notion of Caps’ University.

I live in Chicago, and the Caps now have banner ads, running frequently, on the Tribune and Sun-Times’s sites. Ive also seen Caps banner ads on CNN.com. All are for the “Caps love kids” promo. Check out cnn, tribune, and sun-times sites and see if you get the ads. Im guessing you will. Seems to me to be a WASTE of money for the Caps to advertise in Chicago newspapers sites. Odds are people here arent going to fly to DC for a Caps game. They dont go to the UC here to see the Hawks.

    Thoughts…???

This is a new promotion, but they have had a college id discount program for several seasons; they just do a terrible job of marketing it. Different than this promotion, which has sponsors and appears to be for a specific area and offers a great deal.

The regular student discount program (is no longer called gamma gamma cheapa) appears to offer discounts in different areas of the arena notjust upper level.

And the student discount says it is valid for HS students, too.

Take a look…some of the discounts are as good as the STH discount.

IMO, they need to do a better job marketing to post-college employed twenty and thirty somethings without kids both men and women. They market/offer discounts to students, families, and the military, but miss out on persons most likely to be able to attend a game and over time possibly turn into a season ticket holder.
