Knee-jerks: at Tampa Bay, 1/12/07

Disappointing loss. The Caps seemed to be a step behind the Lightning most of the night, and any lead they got they traded back in.

  • Alexander Semin continues his goal-scoring assault. It’s funny thinking that a few weeks ago, there were articles prominently mentioning his goal-scoring ‘slump’, and now he’s in full sniper bloom. His second goal almost looked like a football running play, with Kris Beech playing the role of fullback, taking on the linebackers. Semin simply followed his block, took the space that Beech created, and buried the shot. Credit to Kris Beech for clearing the line.
  • Maybe not Kolzig’s strongest game.
  • Maybe not Zubrus’ strongest game.
  • Maybe not Clymer’s strongest game, despite the goal.
  • Donald Brashear’s assist on said goal was, frankly, Oates-ian. What a pass. As for the rough stuff, let’s call the fight with Roy a draw. Brashear really seems to be motivated this season — gotta hand it to the big guy.
  • Mike Green responded pretty well to his benching in the Philly game — very active, making smart reads — it’s good to see him turn the negative into a positive.
  • Steve Eminger continues to improve, especially in the physical aspects of the game. Has he completely turned the corner? Probably too early to say, but his progress has been a real positive for the team. I am again reminded of Shaone Morrisonn’s progress last season — slow at first, but really ramping up in the second half of the season. Let’s hope Eminger’s season follows suit.
  • Speaking of Morrisonn, bit of an ugly play on Tampa’s 4th goal — Morrisonn got caught up at Tampa’s blueline, and two Lightning forwards beat him. It was a rarity, to be sure, but that made it stick out even more. Pothier’s matador defense on Lecavalier didn’t help, either.
  • In the “Shows you what I know” department, I was convinced that Chris Clark’s late 2nd period goal was going to change the course of the game. Not so much.
  • Lecavalier was the best player on the ice last night.

Tough loss against a division foe, and a tough way to start off the road trip. Here’s hoping the Caps can put in a tighter effort in Sunrise.

The sequence heading up to Lecav’s first goal was pretty pathetic especially Zubrus getting stripped from behind by Lecav. Zubrus didn’t hear me yelling at him through the TV but he should have, heh.
