OFB to Comcast Sportsnet: We're Telling Santa You've Been Very, Very Good This Year

One of the most pleasant media developments in these parts this season has been Comcast’s commitment to broadening its televised hockey coverage. Tonight, again, Comcast Sportsnet is offering up an NHL broadcast on a night the Caps are off (Rags-Flyers, 7:00).
Remember last year, when on non-hockey nights Comcast larded us with Colonial Athletic Association hoops and women’s intercollegiate volleyball? Less so this year; tonight is the 6th or 7th instance this young hockey season of the outlet drawing upon its Comcast affiliates in other NHL cities and sharing the feed in D.C. Here’s hoping the hockey friendly coverage extends into the postseason.
Fans are fast on the draw to clog Comcast with complaints when a hockey feed fails. We at OFB think outlets like Comcast should receive kudos for puck friendly scheduling. If you appreciate the expanded coverage like we do, drop the outlet a note of thanks:

Comcast appears committed to growing hockey viewership in the States and, more importantly for it, using its NHL coverage as a springboard to acquiring other pro-sports broadcast rights. I especially enjoy the fact that the company has gotten in on the ground floor with the Versus deal, where the NHL is, for now, a key property, as opposed to the later ESPN days when coverage was reluctantly provided with a sigh or a wisecrack.
As much as I cringe at continued media consolidation, I happily admit that Comcast’s regional channel coverage of the Caps and hockey appears to have steadily increased in scope and quality since it bought HTS several years ago.

  2. Too bad these bonus games seem to always feature the Flyers. I guess that’s what happened when the cable company owns that team and the network showing the game in their home market.
