HockeyCanada’s website today has confirmed the extraordinary: two recent, later-round draft picks of the Washington Capitals have been selected for this month’s determinative World Juniors evaluation camp for Team Canada. Mathieu Perreault (6th round, 2006) of the Acadie Bathurst Titan and Patrick McNeill (4th round, 2005) of the Saginaw Spirit will compete for the Canadian World Juniors roster that will travel to Sweden at the end of this month.
Canada’s National Junior Selection Camp will run from December 10-15, 2006, at the Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary. If you’re in Alberta next week the entirety of the camp is free and open to the public, with intra-squad scrimmages set for December 12 and 13. Regardless of the camp outcome for the Caps’ prospects, this news represents a bright feather in the cap of the Caps’ scouting regime, as fully 20 of the 38 invited players were selected in the first two rounds of the past two NHL Entry Drafts.

Interesting note from Daniel Dobish’s fantasy hockey column on CBS Sportsline:
————-
Mathieu Perreault, Acadie-Bathurst (QMJHL): Perreault continues to roll right along and is making the Washington Capitals look like geniuses. It appears that they have struck gold again, although this time they have mined a gem in the sixth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Perreault has 23 goals and 43 assists in just 32 games. He was named the offensive player of November in the QMJHL, posting nine goals and 21 assists in just 13 games with a plus-15 rating. He is leading the league in points and has managed four shorthanded goals in November as well. While he is still at least two years from getting a realistic look from the Capitals, keep him in mind in long-term keeper formats.
