A surprisingly rich crop of hockey articles is currently on ESPN.com. Kudos to Linda Cohn, David Amber, and Scott Burnside for posting quality content. ESPN’s usual editors must be on vacation.
Here’s a Capitals article today about #8, including this neat tidbit:
Zubrus told me that when he picked up Ovechkin for his first day of camp, the rookie asked him to stop by a sporting goods store on the way. A little confused, Zubrus asked him why. Answered Alex: “Because I’m going to need a shield for my helmet.” Zubrus smiled and assured Ovechkin that the Capitals would give him everything he needed.
David Amber’s interview with the notorious Sean Avery yielded an Ovechkin-related comment (as well as a photo of Avery’s girlfriend, the sweater-worthy Elisha Cuthbert):
Q: With Mario and Stevie Y gone, who do you see as the face of the NHL right now?
A: I think with a couple of English lessons, I would like to see it be Ovechkin. I think he is the most exciting player in the league. That’s what we need, someone who brings excitement to the game. At this point, I don’t think a Peyton Manning-type guy is going to work. The game needs somebody as good as Peyton Manning, but with a personality like Ovechkin, and that’s what he has. He’s dynamic both on and off the ice.
ESPN’s page for the upcoming Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Nov 13 includes an excellent Scott Burnside article about Herb Brooks. Don’t know about you, but I never tire of reading about the great Miracle on Ice coach.
By the way, be sure to read Mike Vogel’s hysterical article about the Gordie Howe Hat Trick on the Capitals’ official site.
