DRAFTGEEK – \draft gek \ n [Fr. BeerLatin 1996 ] [first known use: –After the Volchkov and Svejkovsky selections I became a DraftGeek.– That breed of hockey fan characterized by an all-consuming preoccupation with the National Hockey League’s annual summer Entry Draft of 18-year-old North American and European hockey prospects, prone to multiple subscriptions to pay scouting services, fluent with the daily filings on hockeysfuture.com, and as an annual ritual the architect of draft “war rooms” every third Saturday each June.
Two members of the OFB staff (Pucks and Empty) fit this definition to a “T”, and we’ll be posting periodic updates and notes of interest on the Caps’ deep pool of prospects.
Some quick notes:
-Undrafted free-agent signing Jameson “Jamie” Hunt (Hershey) scored a goal in his second professional game, and has three points in three games.
-Mathieu Perreault (Acadie-Bathurst, 6th rnd, 2006) was named QMJHL offensive player of the week for 9/18 to 9/24, and has 26 points in 12 games, notable even in the high-scoring Q.
-It looks like Sasha Pokulok (Hershey, 1st rnd, 2005) sustained a concussion in his first pro game.
-Caps’ Prospects Guru Battleship cites some excellent numbers for Russian prospect goaltender Semen Varlamov (Yaroslavl Lokomotiv, 1st rnd, 2006). Eighteen-year-old netminders seldom earn no. 1 duty in the RSL, and Varlamov is turning heads planet-wide with his early numbers: he’s unbeaten through six games (4-0-2), with a .931 save percentage and a sub 2.00 goals-against. You can read more in the Euro prospects thread on the Caps’ board at Hockey’s Future.
-Niklas Backstrom (Brynas, 1st rnd, 2006) is running wild in the Swedish Elite League, with four goals and nine assists in ten games — good for second in the league in scoring — as an eighteen-year-old.
