My son turned 3 today. Technically (and through the power of time-shifting) he turned 3 at the exact time of this post. Earlier in the week, we went to Wegmans to order the food for his birthday party and more importantly, the cake.
You should know that he is fanatical about The Incredibles right now. He chose his Halloween costume a full six weeks early ….. he’s going to be Dash ….. and he wears it every day. He’d wear it to bed and day care if we let him. The laser of our DVD player is burning a groove in our copy of the movie. He has lines memorized. So, when looking through the book of cakes available, we knew we had a winner when we saw The Incredibles cake, right?
Wrong.
He saw another cake that seduced his sweet tooth … he chose …. the cake decorated as a hockey rink … with hockey players … without being prompted by me. We even showed him several more pictures of cakes including The Incredibles. No… “I want the hockey”.
He is becoming quite the hockey fan, and maybe player. He “skates” in the kitchen with his foam stick and launches the squishy puck with a wicked slap shot and then a la Joe Beninati yells “He shoots, he scores… Alexander Ovechkin”. Among his favourite songs is The Hockey Song. I’ve had to play it multiple times in a row… and he sings along… listen below:
He’s learned more from a picture book version of The Hockey Song along with other children’s hockey books than he ever will from The Compost. (Other children’s hockey books of note, The Hockey Sweater, The Magic Hockey Stick, and Z is for Zamboni)
I look forward to the day where the two of us head to The Phone Booth, and he calls the play icing before me.

Happy Birthday, buddy!
